We have had these backpacks for over 30 years. I got
mine for my 25th birthday and Jenny got hers 5 years before. They have traveled literally around the world, and have done sterling work on all our trips, only requiring a new zip every 15
years (Weston Luggage on Industrial Avenue in Vancouver is the place to go!). Made of stiff canvas, they are a simple compartment with a couple of side pouches and a top zip, so the entire thing opens up providing peak visibility - nothing gets lost in the depths. Convertible to a carrying bag with a long strap, which we never use.
Although backpacks have changed in fashion by
becoming thinner and longer, and made of lighter material, they essentially
remain the same and we will remain attached to ours until they fall apart. Even fully
loaded we do not want them to weigh more than 10-15 lbs (5-ish kilos) just to save on back
pain.
For our trip to India, their contents split roughly into thirds. One
third is taken up by a new, wonderfully light sleeping bag (courtesy of Jenny's parents) and silk sleeping liner
(bought 12 years ago in Vietnam). The next third is our medical kit, toiletries,
useful things bag, and the final third is paperwork/books and clothing (socks and knickers for 10
days and a whole bunch of running/yoga wear that can layer up for cold and look
presentable when dining with a Marahjah.
